Winter Weather Alert: Be Prepared for Snow February 22–23

The National Weather Service is predicting the potential for snow and winter weather beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday, February 22–23. As we prepare for another round of winter conditions, I want to share a few important reminders to help keep everyone safe and to ensure our City crews can do their job effectively.

Prepare Now Before the Storm Arrives

Residents are encouraged to take a few simple steps now:

Please park cars in driveways if possible, or as close to the curb as you can Sunday morning so snowplows can clear streets safely and efficiently. Make sure snow shovels and ice melt are ready and available to treat sidewalks and driveways. Follow City social media, email news updates, and emergency alerts for the latest information as conditions change.

You can stay connected by subscribing to City email updates at City News & Updates or by signing up for text alerts:

Help City Snow Plows Help You

When snow is forecast, every parked vehicle makes a difference. Cars parked along streets can slow down or prevent complete plowing. If you have access to a driveway, please use it. If not, park as close to the curb as possible to give crews maximum clearance.

Our Public Works crews work hard to keep roads clear and passable, and resident cooperation is key to making that process more effective for everyone.

Sidewalk Clearing Reminder

Residents and businesses are required to clear sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours after a snow event ends. Clearing sidewalks helps protect seniors, pedestrians, school children, and neighbors with mobility challenges who rely on safe walking routes.

Collection Schedule Changes

Due to forecasted snow and for the safety of our solid waste workers, trash, recycling, and yard waste collections will shift one day later during the week of February 23:

Monday collections → Tuesday, February 24 Tuesday collections → Wednesday, February 25 Wednesday collections → Thursday, February 26

Special brush and bulky item pickups will be scheduled for Friday, February 27 only, and must be arranged in advance by calling 240-487-3590 or emailing publicworks@collegeparkmd.gov.

Walk With Care

Please use caution when walking on untreated sidewalks and driveways. Snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures can create icy and slippery conditions that may last beyond the storm itself.

As always, thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe. Storm preparation is truly a team effort — residents, businesses, and our dedicated City staff working together. Please check on neighbors who may need extra assistance, and stay tuned for updates through official City channels.

If the City is serious about identifying vacant/abandoned properties, I hope code enforcement spent time surveying the City for these properties during the last snow storm. These houses really stood out because 7-10 days after the storm there were no footprints in their snow nor evidence of attempts to shovel. A survey of the entire City could have been done via car within a week or less and produced a list to start from.
