The University of Maryland (UMD) hosts approximately 4,000 international students on campus who come from over 130 countries. This year, we expect to welcome about 1,500 newly admitted international students. For many students, this will be their first time in the United States; perhaps their first time applying their English language skills outside of an academic classroom. UMD’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is responsible to provide orientation programming for these new students which covers both immigration topics as well as practical information to assist students in their cultural transition and settling in to the College Park area.

There has been interest from members of the College Park community in helping ISSS to welcome new students to the United States and to campus and, specifically, to be a friendly resource that provides helpful information about living in College Park. If you would be interested in getting to know international students in this way, please contact Carol Nezzo (
