Traffic Issues Around Hollywood Elementary School

Traffic around Hollywood Elementary School

Traffic around Hollywood Elementary School

I just drove around the Hollywood Elementary school area and noticed an awful traffic situation. I looked at the area before, but it looks like the situation has gotten worse in recent time.

Between 7:30am to 8:00am, the 49th Ave (in front of the school) becomes a parking lot. I have heard that a similar situation happens in the afternoon when the school dismisses. I can see how this can be a big problem for the resident who live around that area.

I’d like to discuss the issue with local residents and see what the City can do. One solution I can think of is to make that stretch of 49th Avenue one way during the duration of student drop off and pick up and have enforcement around that time. I’ve also requested to have the issue discussed in a future worksession. I will keep you posted once that happens. In the mean time, if you live around that area, please let me know with your thoughts.

You have a good idea in making that stretch of road one way. However, unless the abundance of helicopter parents who refuse to let their children become independent and walk to school, the traffic problem will never abate.

Harry, Thanks for your comments. I also saw parents parking cars on the east side of 49th near Muskogee and this aggravates the problem. I think in addition to making the street one way we should enforce a no parking and standing on the 49th between Edgewood and Muskogee during the drop off and pick up hours.

There is no parking on both sides of the school entrance. The City extended the no parking zones a few years ago at the request of the principal.
