Vol. 2 Issue 15 – National Farmers Market Week is coming up August 7-13, 2016! Did you know Farmers Markets…- Preserve America’s rural livelihoods and farmland. Farmers markets provide one of the only low-barrier entry points for beginning farmers, allowing them to start small, test the market, and grow their businesses.
- Stimulate local economies. Growers selling locally create 13 full time farm operator jobs per $1 million in revenue earned. Those that do not sell locally create 3.
- Increase access to fresh, nutritious food. Several studies have found lower prices for conventional and organic produce at farmers markets than at supermarkets.
- Support healthy communities. Four out of five farmers selling at markets discuss farming practices with their customers, and three in five discuss nutrition and how to prepare food.
- Promote sustainability. Three out of four farmers selling at farmers markets say they use practices consistent with organic standards.

| Latin jazz harpist, PATRICE FISHER favors the music of Brazil and Cuba, saying that, not only is the harp ‘comfortable’ harmonically with the music, but that she herself is drawn to the rhythmic complexities and syncopations: “that’s what makes you want to dance.” Patrice is a graduate of Tulane University and University of New Orleans. She lives in New Orleans, where she has been composing and performing since the 1980’s. She has also appeared at many international jazz festivals with her group, “Arpa,” in locations such as Germany, Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala. Patrice has 15 CDs of original music, the latest being “Resilience.” She has performed for more than 30 years at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Patrice regularly performs throughout the world as a guest artist with international jazz musicians.
