New Vendor: IceGreen SnowballsSnow cones, snowballs—whatever you call them—are now at Hollywood Farmers Market, thanks to Greg Green, owner of IceGreen Snowballs. Green and his sons operate their business out of the eye-catching red truck below. Be sure to stop by and try one of the 22 flavors available. The names of the snowballs sound very refreshing: Island Breeze, Mississippi Margarita, and Wedding Cake.
IceGreenTips for Freezing Fresh Produce Many of us like to eat local, fresh vegetables long after the farmers’ markets close for the season. We buy produce at its peak, which is now, and then prepare it for freezing.Beginner cooks may benefit from the tips below, which can be found in Eating Well’s “Guide to Freezing Fresh Produce” here

  • Trim and wash vegetables under cold water, removing stems.
  • Peel if necessary.
  • Cut to desired size, if necessary, according to their intended use (such as soup).
  • Blanch vegetables before freezing them because, says the guide, “It stops the enzymes that keep vegetables ripening, helps get rid of dirt and bacteria, brightens color, slows vitamin and mineral loss, and wilts and softens the vegetables so they are easier to pack.”
  • Choose containers that are moisture- and vapor-proof: glass jars, metal containers, freezer bags or other plastic containers designed for storing frozen foods. If using plastic bags, be sure to remove as much air as possible before sealing.

Recipe of the Week: Ginger Peachy Bread Pudding

Source: Courtesy of NutritionMD.org

There’s nothing like traditional bread pudding to satisfy the taste buds—except bread pudding dressed up with chunks of golden in-season peaches from our vendors!

Makes 9 servings

1 28-ounce can sliced peaches, packed in juice—or fresh
1 tablespoon cornstarch
6 cups whole-grain bread cubes (about 8 slices)
3/4 cup fortified soy- or rice milk
1/3 cup apple juice concentrate
3/4 cup golden raisins
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 vegetable oil spray

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Drain liquid from peaches into a large mixing bowl. Add cornstarch. Stir to dissolve any lumps, then add bread cubes, non-dairy milk, apple juice concentrate, raisins, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla. Mix well. Chop peaches and stir into bread mixture. Spread in a vegetable oil sprayed 9″×9″ baking dish. Bake 35 minutes. Serve warm or cooled.
