Tomorrow at the Hollywood Farmers Market

Please see below this week’s Hollywood Farmers Market newsletter. See you all tomorrow.

New Coffee Vendor Starting tomorrow at the Hollywood Farmers Market, you can find what may be a perfect pair of vendors—Christine from Cresthill Bakery will return to her usual space at the market and right next to her will be Jose, selling his one-pound bags of locally roasted Guatemalan coffee beans. Alcoba Coffee Beans are grown on a family farm in Guatemala. Jose and his family, which also includes local beekeepers, import the beans and then roast them in small batches. One customer who purchased the beans on Jose’s first day at the market described the coffee as “rich and delicious.” Be sure to pick some up Saturday and see if you agree!Market Volunteer: Christiane Williams

Earlier this year, north College Park resident Christiane Williams agreed to assume the role of chair of the Hollywood Farmers Market Board—on top of working as a vendor most Saturdays.

Christiane’s Designs sells colorful, high-quality home-made knits for babies, pets, and adults. She offers a variety of knitted clothes to cover the little ones from head to toe and beautiful scarves to keep adults warm when the weather turns cold.

Fido and Kitty can share in the delights at Chris’s table, which include knit mice filled with organic catnip and custom-made sweaters for the discriminating pooch.

Her talents also lend themselves to gardening, and we sometimes see plants for sale next to the knits. Stop by to say hello and see what she has for the whole family!

September is National Honey Month

A few of our vendors—like Robert Boone’s Morning Glory Farms—occasionally offer pure honey from their own stash of bee hives. Although most of us think of honey as a sweetener, it has many other valuable uses, according to some sources.

One website (http://www.benefits-of-honey.com/) says that honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and cleansing properties for our body.

“Its powerful healing attributes” have been used for thousands of years and are “known to promote healing for cuts, cure ailments and diseases, and correct health disorders,” according to the above site. The moral of the story is this: Appreciate honey for all of its possible benefits beyond the fact that it’s delicious!

Recipe of the Week: Zucchini and Summer Squash Cakes

Source: Behnke’s Garden Blog, posted August 27, 2014 by Jessica Crawford at http://blog.behnkes.com/

4-5 medium, firm and fresh zucchini, yellow squash or mix of the two
1 tbsp salt
1 c breadcrumbs
1 can (16 oz) whole kernel corn; drained
½ c grated or shredded parmesan
2 eggs
Fresh cracked pepper to taste
1 tsp Italian seasoning

Grate squash into a large mixing bowl.

Sprinkle with salt and mix gently to combine. Set aside for 30 to 60 minutes. Next, rinse squash thoroughly to remove most of salt.

Strain and squeeze through clean tea towel or cheesecloth to remove majority of moisture from veggies.

Return to mixing bowl and add remaining ingredients. (Add other shredded vegetables like a carrot or sweet pepper to add color and sweetness.)

Incorporate all ingredients completely, but don’t over-work mixture. Form into small hamburger-sized patties.

Pan-fry over medium heat, in equal mix of olive oil and melted butter until golden and crispy.

Yield 6 to 8 cakes.
