SHA Plans to Build Route 1 Sidewalks in North College Park Next Year

Representatives from the State Highway Administration came to City Council worksession last night to present the design of the proposed route 1 retrofit side walk program. The sidewalks will be built on both sides of Route 1 from north of beltway to Rt 193. They have construction funding of $450,000. Construction is expected start sometime next year. The area between Chrokee and Fox St needs a retaining wall which will cot some $200,000, which is not included in this project’s budget. Some 60 properties will be affected during this construction.

Excellent news. Do you know how long construction is projected to take? Excluding the possibility of snow, will there likely be a slowdown during the winter due to cold temperatures? (Concrete doesn’t typically get poured when temps are near or below freezing.)

I wonder if the SHA is taking into account a future reconstruction of northern Route 1 when determining positioning of the sidewalk. (Granted, a sidewalk is better than no sidewalk, and at the current pace it seems reconstruction on this portion of Route 1 won’t begin this decade.)

The construction schedule has not been finalized yet in details. We anticipate it will be phased development, with the small portion between Cherokee and Fox being built some time later. You’re right, the reconstruction or Route 1 in north College Park will take many years, after they finish the part south of 193.
