Saturday’s Market Offers One-Stop Shopping for Mother’s Day

Please see below this week’s Hollywood Farmers Market newsletter. See you all tomorrow.

FlowersThis Sunday is Mother’s Day, and it’s officially 100 years old!
Although it’s celebrated in different ways throughout the world, a lady named Anna Jarvis founded the American version in 1908. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson officially set aside the second Sunday in May as a day to honor motherhood.

Traditionally, the day involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts, which is where vendors at the Hollywood Farmers Market can help. Several will offer flowering plants, and Red Chimney Farm always sells beautiful cut flowers, available by the stem or the bunch. At least one vendor will have vegetable starter plants, like tomatoes, peppers and herbs.

If you’re looking for more than flowers, check out the jewelry our vendors have available, and if Mom has a sweet tooth, stop by Heavenly Created Desserts to purchase a box of cupcakes or other treats! Your Mom might really like an Adirondack chair from 49th Avenue Furniture.flower1

If those don’t appeal, try filling up a reusable MOM’s Organic Market bag (available for free at the market table) with local produce from one or more of our farmers.

Pam Stegall, owner of Calvert Farms, for example, says she will have the following available on Saturday: asparagus, carrots, collards, kale, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, scallions, radishes, rhubarb, and fresh-cut herbs.

These and other options are available from 9 am to 1 pm.

Invited guests include our political leaders: Senator Jim Rosapepe; Delegates Ben Barnes, Barbara Frush, and Joseline Peña-Melnyk; County Council members Mary Lehman and Eric Olson; and Mayor Andy Fellows.
