Acconcerned resident recently reached out via email after experiencing a frightening incident on Campus Drive near the Metro station. The resident described a situation where they ended up in a head-on traffic conflict due to unclear markings and a poorly managed traffic flow. Both directions of traffic found themselves facing each other on a one-lane road at a temporary stoplight. As confusion mounted, cars and buses began piling up behind them. Fortunately, a bystander stepped in to direct traffic, and the situation de-escalated without incident. However, the resident described the ordeal as deeply unsettling and noted that it could have easily resulted in a collision or injuries.

Upon reflecting on the situation, the resident realized they should have stopped further back before the road narrowed from two lanes to one. However, they emphasized that there were no clear signs or markings to indicate this, leaving drivers unaware and vulnerable to similar dangerous encounters. The resident appealed for immediate action to address the chaotic and hazardous conditions, expressing concern for public safety.

The resident’s concerns were acknowledged with an apology for the inconvenience and assurance that the issue was temporary. The matter was promptly raised with the city’s construction and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) teams. Upon review, it was confirmed that the current setup aligns with plans approved by the county, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), and the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA).

To address the concerns, several actions were implemented as of last Thursday:

1. Visual Message Board: Installed to inform drivers of the traffic shift and improve awareness.

2. Adjusted Sign Placement: The “Stop Here on Red” sign on Campus Drive was moved to provide more space for drivers before the alternating single-lane traffic begins.

3. Repainted Stop Bars: Clearer markings were added to guide drivers on where to stop.

It was also clarified that drivers following the timing of the temporary traffic light, which alternates the flow of vehicles under the underpass, should not experience conflicts or head-on situations

The construction team has confirmed that two-way traffic through the intersection will resume next week, significantly improving conditions for drivers. While the temporary setup caused confusion and inconvenience, these measures aim to ensure public safety and minimize further disruptions until the full reopening.

This incident highlights the importance of clear communication and safety during construction projects. The city remains committed to addressing concerns and improving traffic management in future projects.
