Please see below this week’s Hollywood Farmers Market newsletter. See you all tomorrow.

Last Saturday was opening day of the second season of the Hollywood Farmers’ Market. In spite of the cold winter, which was hard on farmers everywhere, our vendors brought us a good selection of cool-weather vegetables and herbs and, as always, excellent apples.

We also had flowers and herbs (both for planting and for display) in addition to food-to-go offerings from Roy and RT (Eastern Delights), Heavenly Desserts, and Phil’s Dills. We also saw jewelry, pottery, knitted items, and artisan soaps and lotions on display.

New Vendors
We’re proud to say that most of the vendors who joined us last year are back again! We also will have a few new ones, including:

Upper Crust Bakery

Upper Crust Bakery

• Beltsville-based Upper Crust/Crest Hill Bakery joined us last week, and anyone who purchased one or more of its artisan breads knows what an excellent addition they are to the market. Their breads and cookies are not only delicious, but also made entirely with natural ingredients–with NO chemicals, preservatives, artificial coloring or additives.
• Joe Smith, long-time resident of College Park, is now at the market selling goods through his business, 49th Avenue Furniture. When you see his hand-crafted, all-wood, outdoor furniture, you’ll want to take something home with you. He makes Adirondack and deck chairs, benches, picnic tables, and other wooden items, including foot stools and walking sticks. All wood is fair trade-certified, and his walking sticks are made from locally sourced wood.

Extra Special – Thanks to Mom’s
The managers of MOM’s Organic Market, which is located right by our market in the Hollywood Shopping Center, came through for us again, donating 150 of its shopping bags for distribution. Using free shopping bags like these reduces the need to use plastic bags, which are a waste of natural resources and can pollute our environment for thousands of years after disposal. There are still plenty of bags available, so come and get yours this Saturday!

This Week’s Recipe: Raw Kale Salad
Contributed by Kennis Termini
(Source: University of Maryland Extension Center)

Here’s a recipe that you can get creative with—by adding other items you like, such as roasted red peppers, artichokes etc.

Kale Salad

Kale Salad

Makes 5 ¾ cup servings

Wash and dry 1 bunch of kale
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
2 garlic cloves
1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 tablespoon of tahini
A handful of nuts, raisins, and/or fruit
Any kind of grated cheese (optional)
Plain bread crumbs (optional)
Salt to taste

Remove kale stems and chop kale finely. Place in large bowl. Chop garlic finely. In a small bowl, add garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, tahini (if using), and salt to taste. Pour dressing over kale and toss well. Let salad sit for 5 minutes.
