The UMd’ new president Dr. Wallace Loh has recently started five task force aimed at making College Park a great University town, according to this Diamondback article.

Though College Park’s official tag line says “the home of the University of Maryland”, the city has failed so far to improve its image as a great university town, mainly because of its bad reputation on crime, inconvenient  transportation and poor off campus housing. A very few university staff live in the city.

The five work groups — safety, housing and development, transportation, sustainability and education — that pull leadership from state, local and university officials. By August, each must compile a report detailing how the university can work with the city and Prince George’s County to progress in each area.

Several local and state officials will be leading the working groups. They include City Mayor Andrew Fellows, County Councilman Eric Olson, State Delegate Joseline Men-nyk and University of Maryland Police Chief David Mitchell.
