At last week’s Council meeting, the City of College Park approved a plan to move forward with the Lakeland Heritage Arts Project (Item 25-G-92), an initiative that will bring new public art installations to one of our most historic neighborhoods.

The project stems from an FY23 Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) grant that was originally awarded for an augmented reality walking tour in Lakeland. Due to delays and challenges in moving that project forward, the City requested and received approval to re-scope the funding toward a new community arts program. Rather than letting the grant expire, this approach ensures that the funds will continue to highlight Lakeland’s story in meaningful ways.

The re-scoped project will create up to ten site-specific murals throughout Lakeland. These murals will be designed to reflect the neighborhood’s rich history, cultural heritage, and resilience. By showcasing art in public spaces, the project not only enhances the ongoing Lakeland Walking Tour but also provides new opportunities for residents, visitors, and future generations to connect with the community’s legacy.

The Lakeland Heritage Arts Project represents another step in College Park’s commitment to preserving local history while using creative expression to bring people together. Once complete, the murals will serve as powerful visual reminders of the importance of honoring the past while looking toward the future.
