Understanding College Park’s Leash Law
Under College Park’s Municipal Code 102-3, “Restraint of Animals,” pet owners are required to keep their animals leashed or caged when off their own premises and in the immediate supervision of a responsible person. This law is designed to ensure that pets don’t approach others without consent, helping to maintain a safe, enjoyable environment for all.
Why Leashing Matters
- Safety for Pets
Leashing your pet reduces the risks they face from vehicles, wildlife encounters, or even theft. Keeping pets close protects them from hazards they might not perceive and allows owners to quickly step in if a potential danger arises. - Avoiding Fines
Failing to follow the leash law could lead to costly fines. The penalties start at $50 for a first offense and can escalate to $250 for repeated violations. Leashing is a simple way to avoid these penalties and prevent conflicts with neighbors or other community members. - Community Peace
While you may know your pet is friendly, not everyone feels comfortable around animals, especially when they’re unleashed. Some residents, particularly those with a fear of animals or with young children, may feel uneasy when approached by an off-leash pet. Keeping pets leashed fosters a sense of security and respect in shared spaces. - Preventing Liability Issues
As a pet owner, you are legally liable for any harm or damage caused by your pet if they’re off-leash. This includes injuries to other pets, people, or property damage, which could result in legal and financial consequences. Leashing your pet minimizes these risks.
