College Park Aviation Museum

February is a special and meaningful month at the College Park Airport Museum, as we celebrate Black History Month by lifting up the powerful stories of African Americans who shaped aviation history—often against incredible odds. Through guided tours, living history experiences, and special exhibitions, the museum is offering residents and visitors a chance to connect with a remarkable legacy rooted right here in our region.

Black Aviators Tour – February 7

One of the highlights of the month is the Black Aviators Tour, a free PastPort to History event that introduces visitors to pioneering African American aviators—from international trailblazers like Eugene Bullard to local figures such as Gus McLeod.

The tour also explores the extraordinary story of the nearby Columbia Air Center, the first licensed airport in the United States owned and operated by African Americans. This site stands as a testament to resilience, entrepreneurship, and excellence in the face of segregation and exclusion.

Soaring Against the Odds: Living History Tour – February 28

Later in the month, visitors can take part in Soaring Against the Odds: African Americans in Aviation, a Living History Tour that brings these stories to life. Through engaging interpreters—including portrayals connected to icons like Bessie Coleman—participants will learn about the barriers African Americans faced in both civilian and military aviation and how determination and courage helped open doors for future generations.

This immersive experience includes museum admission and offers a deeper look at how African American aviators persevered through racism, institutional barriers, and social prejudice to claim their place in the skies.

A Local Story with National Impact

Both experiences also feature a special look at the exhibition Columbia Air Center – Determined to Fly, which highlights a critical but often overlooked chapter of local and national history. It’s a powerful reminder that College Park is not only the site of the world’s oldest continuously operating airport, but also a place where African American aviation history took flight.
