Beginning today, December 16 through Tuesday, December 30, Metrorail riders on the Green Line should plan for longer wait times and more crowded trains due to scheduled single-tracking work.

According to WMATA, Green Line trains will operate every 16 minutes between Branch Avenue and Greenbelt during this period. Riders should expect especially crowded conditions between Mt. Vernon Square/7th Street–Convention Center and Greenbelt, including stations serving College Park residents.

What’s Causing the Disruption?

WMATA will be performing planned work to improve the customer experience, requiring single tracking in both directions between:

  • Georgia Ave–Petworth

  • Columbia Heights

  • U Street

While construction will physically occur at U Street and Columbia Heights, trains traveling through Georgia Ave–Petworth will also be affected by the single-tracking configuration. Importantly, all affected stations will remain open throughout the construction period.

Service Details During Construction

  • Green Line: Every 16 minutes between Branch Ave and Greenbelt

  • Yellow Line: Every 8 minutes between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square

  • Service changes apply weekdays and weekends

Because of reduced Green Line frequency, riders traveling during peak hours should allow extra travel time and consider adjusting schedules where possible.

What Happens Next?

Once construction concludes, WMATA will move forward with the planned Yellow Line extension to Greenbelt, beginning December 31:

  • Half of Yellow Line trains will operate between Huntington and Greenbelt

  • The remaining half will operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square

This extension will provide additional one-seat ride options for College Park riders traveling to and from downtown DC and Northern Virginia.

Plan Ahead

If you rely on the Green Line:

  • Expect longer waits and fuller trains

  • Allow extra time for your commute

  • Monitor WMATA service updates for real-time changes

Thank you for your patience as Metro completes this important work to improve service reliability. I’ll continue to share updates that impact College Park residents as they become available.
