The Governor’s recently proposed capital budget includes significant allocations that directly address two major priorities for College Park: the ongoing development of Route 1 and flood mitigation efforts in the Calvert Hills neighborhood. Here are the highlights:
Key Allocations for Route 1 Development
The transformation of Route 1 continues to receive strong state support:
- $1,176,000 has been allocated to complete Segment 1 (from MD 193 and College Avenue) of the Route 1 improvement project.
- Looking ahead, $1 million in FY27 and $1.2 million in FY28 are projected for Segments 2 and 3 (from MD 193 to Beltway).
These improvements will enhance safety, accessibility, and infrastructure along this critical corridor, benefiting residents, businesses, and the University of Maryland community alike.
Funding for Stormwater Mitigation in Calvert Hills
Flooding has long been a concern for residents in the Calvert Hills neighborhood, and this year’s budget includes a critical request to address this issue:
- $12 million has been requested to reduce flooding and improve stormwater management in the area.
This investment will help safeguard homes, infrastructure, and the environment, offering long-term relief for a community that has faced repeated stormwater challenges.
Investment in Quantum Innovation
The budget also highlights College Park’s growing role as a leader in research and innovation:
- $27.5 million has been allocated for the Capital of Quantum initiative on East Campus Drive.
This funding will further establish College Park as a hub for groundbreaking advancements in quantum technology, benefiting both the local and global community.
City-Specific Budget Requests
In addition to the major projects above, several important local initiatives have been proposed for funding:
- Fire Suppression at Attick Towers
- $325,000 to install fire suppression systems, enhancing safety for residents of this housing facility.
- Youth Services Bureau Meditation Garden
- $250,000 to create a meditation garden at the Youth Services Bureau, providing a tranquil space to support mental health and well-being for youth and families.
What’s Next?
These investments and funding requests reflect a strong commitment to College Park’s growth and well-being. The Route 1 and Calvert Hills initiatives address critical infrastructure and environmental needs, while the focus on quantum innovation and community services ensures that College Park continues to thrive as a vibrant and forward-looking city.
I will continue to work with our state and local partners to advocate for these priorities and keep you updated on their progress. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about these initiatives, feel free to reach out!

The youth can meditate on the swings and at the unused picnic tables at Edgewood and RI. Ave. for free. $250,000.00 can be put to better use. How about tutoring so they can graduate from high school?
