Funds Announced for Route 1, Purple Line and Greenbelt Metro Development

Gov. Martin O’Malley yesterday announced $650 million in transportation projects in Prince George’s County.

The funds include $280 million for Purple Line right-of-way acquisition and design, $7 million to design a full interchange at the Capital Beltway and Greenbelt Metro station, and $20 million for pedestrian and bicycle upgrades along Route 1 in College Park.

O’Malley noted the projects have been made possible by a gas tax increase that was approved in the legislative session. It is Maryland’s first gas tax increase in two decades. The governor said the projects will be designed to ease traffic congestion and boost jobs.
