As part of the City’s participation in the Sustainable Maryland Certified Program, the Council approved a sustainability plan that included the creation of a community garden as one of our priority actions. Recent survey results have shown sufficient interest to indicate that a community garden will be successful in the City.

A potential site has been identified in Old Town Park, near the intersection of Norwich Road and Columbia Avenue. Council will discuss the proposal and rules for the use of the garden, and will consider authorizing staff to move forward with implementation of the garden.

The garden will operate with a hybrid model of volunteers and staff, with volunteer “garden masters” supervising the use of the plots and reporting concerns that they cannot resolve to city staff. Renters of the plots will be required to keep them cultivated during the growing season.
