At this week’s meeting, the City Council approved a letter in support of two Maryland bills HB 1646 and SB 1036 Criminal Procedure, Firearms Transfer, in order to close a loophole in getting guns for the folks with a criminal background.

Maryland law prohibits convicted domestic abusers from having guns, and abusers under protective orders must turn in their guns. However, the law does not now require the convicted abusers to turn in guns they already own.

This legislation would require the court to inform defendants convicted of domestic violence crimes that they are legally prohibited from possessing firearms and to order them to surrender any firearms they already own. The presence of guns in domestic violence situations may significantly increase the likelihood that the woman will be killed.
