After years of advocacy by the City of College Park, the Four Cities Coalition, our state delegation, and community members, the next phase of Route 1 improvements is moving forward.
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is seeking public feedback on proposed improvements along US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) from MD 193 (University Boulevard) to Sunnyside Avenue in Prince George’s County. This project represents the next phases of the Route 1 reconstruction effort following the completion of Phase 1, which transformed the corridor between College Avenue and MD 193.
The proposed improvements aim to make the corridor safer, more accessible, and more attractive for everyone who travels through the area. Concepts being considered include pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, bus accessibility improvements, landscaping, and other safety enhancements.
Community members are invited to attend a Public Informational Workshop to learn more about the project, review proposed concepts, ask questions, and provide feedback directly to project representatives.

Route 1 is a critical transportation corridor used daily by residents, students, workers, and visitors throughout College Park, Beltsville, Greenbelt, Berwyn Heights, and surrounding communities. Improvements to this roadway have long been among the City’s top transportation priorities.
The completion of Phase 1 demonstrated the positive impact that modernized infrastructure can have on safety, mobility, accessibility, and the overall appearance of the corridor. As planning advances for Phases 2 and 3, public input will play an important role in shaping the future of this section of Route 1.
I encourage everyone who uses this corridor to participate in the workshop and share their ideas. Your feedback can help ensure that the project reflects the needs and priorities of our community for years to come.

The biggest miss on Phase 1 was not putting the powerlines underground. Every new development project should pay to bury the lines along that stretch of Route 1 or pay in to a fund that will compile multiple stretches together if that is more cost-effective.

Do you know what are the plans for the Cherry Hill and Edgewood Rd. intersections?

Mary, This intersection should be part of the plan as well. I do not know all the details at this time.
