In last night’s work session, the Council decided to have a vote on a proposed Prince George’s County that seeks to impose fees for Use of Disposable Bags.

The bill enables the County to impose a fee for plastic bags in the County. The fee would apply to retail establishments that provide disposable bags to its customers as a result of the sale of a product.

It excludes restaurant bags, medication bags, newspaper/dry cleaning bags, flower bags, and frozen, bulk and baked goods bags. If this legislation passes, the County would likely set the bag fee at $0.05 per bag, similar to Washington, D.C.

Delegate Barbara Frush and Senator Paul Pinsky have sponsored the bill. County Councilwoman Mary Lehman strongly supports this legislation.
