At last week’s City Council meeting, a resolution was passed to establish a Childcare Task Force. This newly-formed group will tackle one of the most significant challenges facing families in College Park—access to affordable, high-quality childcare. The Council recognizes the critical role childcare plays in supporting families, enhancing early childhood development, and maintaining a stable community.

Why Create a Task Force?

The rising costs and limited availability of childcare services have placed immense pressure on families, particularly those with young children. By creating this Task Force, the City aims to explore comprehensive strategies to make childcare more accessible and affordable, while also ensuring the quality of services meets the needs of College Park’s diverse population.

Task Force Responsibilities

The Childcare Task Force will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Legislation Monitoring: The Task Force will collaborate with the City’s lobbyist to review relevant bills in the Maryland General Assembly and recommend actions for the City to advocate for state-level reforms.
  2. Provider Engagement: Interviews with local childcare providers will shed light on the challenges they face and potential ways to lower operational costs while expanding services.
  3. Resource Research: The group will research federal, state, county, and nonprofit childcare programs to identify funding opportunities and best practices.
  4. Comprehensive Recommendations: By June 30, 2025, the Task Force will present a detailed report to the Council, outlining actionable steps to improve childcare accessibility and affordability.

Who Will Be Involved?

The Task Force will consist of nine members, with representatives from each City Council district and one member from the Education Advisory Committee. Members will be selected for their experience, knowledge, or passion for childcare and their ability to provide diverse perspectives on the issue. The group will be supported by City staff and a contracted secretary to ensure efficient operations.
