Top 5 Reasons to Attend National Night Out. Reason 4: Meet your Neighbors and Join Neighborhood Watch

The fourth reason to attend tomorrow’s National Night Out is to meet your neighbors and join the Neighborhood Watch Program. According to crime statistics, crime in our area is not limited to nighttime. Not everyone can afford a home security system. Police can’t be everywhere at once and must rely on the active participation of community residents for crime prevention. Since crime is most likely to occur when no one is watching, a Neighborhood Watch team can act as an extra set of “eyes and ears” when police aren’t around. Neighborhood Watch does more than just canvass the community. It also gives residents an opportunity to get to know others in the neighborhood, open the lines of communication with local police and encourage better overall cooperation among residents in crime prevention efforts. Participation in Neighborhood Watch builds confidence and encourages residents to take an active interest in one another’s properties and livelihoods. Here in College Park, we’re slowly building the Neighborhood Watch program, We currently have a few blocks formed and a few others are in the process of being formed. Please come and find out how you can also start your own Neighborhood Watch program on your street block. We expect to have members of existing Neighborhood Watch blocks and share their experience on how the Neighborhood Watch program is working on their blocks.

This Year’s National Night Out is Cancelled

At last week’s meeting, the Council decided t cancel a physical National Night Out (NNO) and approving the development of a virtual NNO experience.

National Night Out (NNO) is a community/police public safety awareness-raising event in the United States, held the first Tuesday of August in most of the country. Due to limits on social gatherings and physical distancing requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council determined to reschedule NNO in the City, to the first Tuesday of October 2020. As the pandemic remains a public health risk and is anticipated to continue to require limits to social gatherings, the staff is recommending that the 2020 event be redesigned as a virtual event only.

One City-wide virtual event is envisioned. Residents could participate by turning on porch lights and “tuning in” to a program of crime prevention education presentations, and other community risk reduction information.

Some entertainment might be included. Some at-home activities such as testing smoke alarms, or ringing in the night by a communal noise making event at a certain, limited, time might be considered.

This Year’s NAtional Night Out May Move to October

At this week’s City Council meeting, the Council will consider postponing the August NNO event to October (if feasible at that time) and change Council Worksession dates in August and October to accommodate this change.

This year, 2020, all summer events which would draw large groups to one location have been canceled in order to minimize public health exposure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Therefore, staff is recommending postponing the August NNO event to the first Tuesday in October, October 6. This would be the same day as NNO is observed in other parts of the U.S. and could allow greater participation since an October date wouldn’t conflict with summer vacation plans and could allow UMD student residents to participate.

A final decision about holding the event in October will be based on public health guidelines due to COVID-19.
