For many older adults, remaining in the comfort of their own home for as long as possible is a top priority. As health needs increase, however, staying independent can become more challenging. Fortunately, Prince George’s County residents, including those in College Park, now have access to a valuable resource designed to make aging in place easier: the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).
PACE is a federally recognized program that provides comprehensive medical, social, and long-term care services to eligible adults age 55 and older who meet the medical criteria for nursing home-level care but can continue living safely in the community with the right support. Rather than coordinating multiple doctors, specialists, and service providers, participants receive personalized care through one interdisciplinary team that manages virtually every aspect of their health and wellness.
A new Senior CommUnity Care of Maryland PACE Center has opened on Brightseat Road in Hyattsville, bringing these services closer to residents of Prince George’s County. Participants may receive primary and specialty medical care, prescription medications, physical and occupational therapy, adult day services, mental health support, home care assistance, nutritious meals, transportation to medical appointments, and much more—all coordinated through a single program.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be 55 years of age or older.
- Live within the PACE service area, which includes College Park.
- Be certified by the State of Maryland as meeting the medical criteria for a nursing home level of care.
- Be able to live safely in the community with PACE services at the time of enrollment.
For many participants, the program comes at little or no cost. Seniors who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid generally pay nothing for approved services, medications, or care. Those with Medicare but not Medicaid may pay a monthly premium, and private-pay options are also available.
If you or someone you love is facing the challenges of aging while wishing to remain at home, the PACE program may be worth exploring. Programs like PACE help older adults maintain their independence, improve their quality of life, and provide peace of mind for families and caregivers. If you think you or a loved one may be eligible, it may be worthwhile to learn more about this valuable resource.
