Improving pedestrian safety and walkability continues to be one of our key priorities—and at this week’s City Council meeting, we’re taking another important step in that direction.
The Council will consider approval of a new sidewalk along the north side of 48th Place, connecting 47th Avenue to Muskogee Street. This project is part of our broader Complete and Green Streets initiative, which focuses on making our streets safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for everyone—whether you’re walking, biking, or driving.
This isn’t a new idea. Back in 2018, the City developed a priority list of sidewalk projects, and this segment of 48th Place was identified as a key missing link. Right now, there’s a gap in the pedestrian network, and this project will help complete a continuous, safer walking route in the neighborhood.
What I really appreciate about this project is the level of community engagement that went into it. City staff reached out to residents multiple times, shared design concepts, and gathered feedback through surveys and community meetings. Based on that input, the preferred option is to build the sidewalk along the north (odd-numbered) side of the street.
The design carefully balances safety and neighborhood character. The road will be slightly narrowed—from 26 feet to 25 feet—but will still maintain parking on both sides while creating a defined travel lane. Some driveway adjustments and minor construction elements are included, but overall, the project aims to improve safety with minimal disruption.
Projects like this may seem small, but they make a big difference. Sidewalks improve safety for pedestrians, help connect neighborhoods, and make it easier for residents of all ages to get around—whether it’s walking to a park, visiting a neighbor, or simply enjoying a stroll.
This investment is part of the City’s capital program, with approximately $325,000 allocated for the project.
I’m looking forward to supporting this effort and continuing to build a safer, more walkable College Park—one project at a time.

This is such a waste of money. There is virtually no traffic on that stretch of road and even less pedestrian travel. Money would be better spent completing the sidewalk along 47th Pl between Muskogee and Lackawanna St and it would be even better if the sidewalk continued to Hollywood Rd. 47th Pl is a much more traveled road for vehicles and pedestrians.
