Chair Massages Now Availablemassage

Before or after you do your market shopping, treat yourself to a 10-minute chair massage at the Elated Harmonies Massage tent.

For a small fee, you will receive a deeply relaxing chair massage of your neck, shoulders and back from Nora, a registered Maryland massage practitioner, who is now a regular vendor at our market.Nora, who founded Elated Harmonies Massage soon after graduating the Potomac Massage Institute of Washington in 2012, has extensive training in anatomy, physiology, and additional certifications in hot stone and Ayurvedic spa and bodywork.

Her philosophy is that “the power of touch can restore, relieve and renew,” as she says on her website at http://www.elatedharmoniesmassage.com/.

Need Bread?
Unfortunately, our much beloved bread vendor, Christelle of Cresthill Bakery, will not be at the market this coming Saturday, August 23 or next Saturday, August 30. However, don’t worry, she will return to her spot on September 6.

Recipe of the Week: Tomato Pie

Prep Time: 20 minutes; Cook Time: 40 minutes; Yield: 6 to 8 slices

Ingredients:
4 medium tomatoes, Salt, 1 regular pie crust
3/4 cup mayonnaise, 2 cups mozzarella cheese, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, 3 garlic cloves, minced, 8 to 10 basil leaves, chopped (or 1 teaspoons dried basil)

Instructions:
Thinly slice the tomatoes and salt them. Place them in a strainer or on a cooling rack to allow the salt to draw out some of the moisture.

Bake the pie crust per the instructions and cool.

Preheat the oven to 350° F.

In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and minced garlic. Stir well and set aside.

Return to the tomatoes and use paper towels to blot them well to remove the excess moisture. Layer the tomatoes and chopped basil in the pie crust. Spread the cheese mixture over the top.

Bake for about 40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown. [Source]

SHA to Build Fence to Improve Pedestrian Safety on Route 1

Rt1 FenceThe State Highway Administration (SHA) crews are placing concrete footers that will support a fence between Knox Road and Hartwick Road to deter mid-block pedestrian crossings on US 1. Weather permitting, the installation of the fence should be complete by early September. To complete the installation of the fence, crews are permitted to close a single lane in both directions of US 1, weekdays, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The fence is part of SHA’s effort to enhance safety along US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) from Guilford Road/Guilford Drive to Berwyn Road in College Park as University of Maryland students arrive for the start of the new school year.

Last month, SHA lowered the speed limits along US 1 from 30 to 25 miles per hour from Guilford Road/Guilford Drive to Berwyn Road. Additionally, with the signal timing changes in the corridor, motorists need to allow extra time to travel through College Park on US 1. The summer months showed minimal impact to traffic, but as school starts and summer ends, the traffic volumes increase and more time will be needed to travel through the corridor.

SHA is also working on a pedestrian-activated signal that will stop traffic in all directions at the intersection of US 1 and Hartwick Road. During installation of the signal poles and utilities, pedestrians will need to stay clear of the construction area. SHA plans to activate the signal by late October.

“Temporary sidewalk closures will be necessary to complete the installation of these new safety measures,” said Brian Young, SHA District 3 Engineer. “When traveling near a closed section of sidewalk, pedestrians should pay attention and look for the color orange—the color of construction signs, fencing, barrels and cones—which sometimes means safely crossing to the opposite side of Baltimore Avenue to avoid work zones.”

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Those who will get injured in an accident caused by a negligent driver may hire a car accident injury lawyer to help them seek compensation for their injuries or damages. An experienced car accident lawyer can help you get the justice you deserve. So if you’ve recently been involved in an auto accident, it’s best to speak to a professional car accident lawyer for expert legal services.

Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!

City Plans to Make Permit Application Forms Online

City’s website has many permit application forms like the one. http://www.collegeparkmd.gov/government/public_services/applications_and_forms.php,
Unfortunately it’s not very user friendly to use these forms, as our residents need to download, print, fill out, scan and attach these forms via email. Then they will need to make a separate phone call to make the payment for the application fee.
The good news is that as part of FY15 action plan, our staff and IT will soon start working to make these forms online on our website. This will make the application process a lot simpler. Once these forms are converted to online forms, our residents can fill out the information on our website and submit the payment there on the same web page.
We anticipate the conversion work to begin sometime in the 3rd quarter of this fiscal year. They will most likely start with the forms related to Public Services department and then work on the forms in other departments. I will keep you posted as the conversion takes place.

Interested in Community Garden? Take the Survey

Community garden

The City would like your opinion on starting a community garden in College  Park. Here is the link.

Community Gardens are beneficial for public health and for the environment.  They’re also a great way to help strengthen neighborhood connections and foster a  sense of community between residents.

Printed copies of the survey are available at City Hall, Davis Hall and Youth and  Family Services for residents without computer access. The survey will be available on line thorough August 22nd.

The Maryland Park and Planning manages four community gardens in the area, the closest one to College Park residents is on Cherry Hill Road, just outside of the city boundary. If you want to rent a plot in one of these gardens, please contact the Park and Planning here.

Mundo Latino Hit By Another Robbery – Police Releases Reward Poster

In case you’ve seen police cars in front of Mundo Latino yesterday evening, it’s because the store has been hit by another robbery. Police is trying to find more information on the nature of the robbery.

The market is located at 5000 Edgewood Rd., near Rhode Island Avenue, in north College Park.

According to the Prince George’s County Police, On August 15th, 2014 at approximately 1950 hours, the suspects committed an armed robbery. They are working to identify the two suspects shown in the above surveillance photographs.

Anyone with information that may assist in this investigation is asked to call CRIME  SOLVERS at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or the CID-Robbery Unit at 301-772-4905 as soon as possible. Please refer to case number 14-227-2621. Whenever information is given to the Prince George’s County Crime Solvers Line, you do not have to leave your name. A CASH REWARD OF UP TO $1000.00 is being offered for the tip that leads to the arrest and indictment of the suspects responsible for this attempt robbery.

It’s truly unfortunate that this particular store has been hit by several robberies in the recent months. The business has security cameras inside the store, but the front windows are covered by advertisement, which makes robbers to get away easily. We’ve asked the store owner to clear up the window, so that things inside the store can be seen from outside, but without much success. Police will start working on a security plan for the store and we plan to talk to the store owner about that very soon.

Sorry for being the bearer of this news. Stay safe and enjoy your weekend.

This morning, Police has released this reward poster

UPDATE: (Aug 16, 2014): Police has also released more information about the vehicle used in the robbery and the description of two suspects:

Highlighting HFM Board Members

Although some of the board members would like to remain anonymous, our fearless leader, who will go un-named, asked the newsletter editor to spotlight each member, beginning with herself.

The HFM board voted Janis Oppelt (in lovely balloon hat below) as its secretary and newsletter editor for one primary reason—she can write, and, in fact, she writes for a living and actually likes it (usually).

Janis

You will see her at the market, buying a little of what she wants from each farmer and trying (but usually failing) not to buy another beautiful piece of jewelry from Betty Gailes, owner of Ear Gear, like the one below.
