This coming Saturday, June 29, marks the official “GRAND OPENING” of the Hollywood Farmers Market (HFM) in North College Park. You may have noticed the big flashing signs on Rhode Island Avenue announcing it. The market had its “soft opening” on June 1, but after working out the kinks, we’re ready to celebrate the grand opening at the one-month anniversary of the Market at 10 am with a ribbon-cutting. Special guests include Maryland Senator Jim Rosapepe (District 21) and other elected officials!

Going the Extra Mile

To mark the occasion, several College Park volunteer organizations will join the regular vendors.

• Prince George’s County Police Department Community Liaison Corporal Jaron Black will be at the Market to answer your questions and concerns about safety and crime in our neighborhood.
• College Park Neighborhood Watch will be there to talk about this program and recruit participants.
• Members at the Committee for a Better Environment (CBE) table will distribute reusable produce bags (not to be confused with the shopping bags that MOM will distribute) and display informational brochures about topics like how to prune trees and how to compost.
• Melissa Sites from the College Park Arts Exchange will serenade us with her guitar.
• The College Park Community Library will be there between 9 am and 11 am to sign up new members.
• Branchville Volunteer Fire Department will be at the Market with a firetruck and free fire hats for the kids!

Heavenly Created Desserts
If you have a sweet tooth—even a little bit of a sweet tooth, you won’t want to miss Sharon Morrison’s tent. Sharon, owner of Heavenly Created Desserts and College Park resident, makes her baked goods from scratch using gourmet ingredients, such as Valrhona cocoa and Madagascar vanilla beans, as well as fresh and frozen fruits. Specialties include cupcakes and a variety of fruit crisps. Examples of desserts that residents have tried and loved: the Oreo cupcake, caramel-filled cupcake, and chocolate merlot cupcake. This Week’s Recipe – Chinese Green Bean Salad and Dressing

Ingredients for the beans:
1 pound fresh green beans
1 tablespoon finely chopped or grated fresh ginger root
1 cup sliced red onion

Ingredients for the Dressing:
In a small bowl, mix the following:
4 teaspoons dry mustard powder
1 tablespoon cold water
2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
3 tablespoons rice or cider vinegar
2 teaspoons dark-roasted sesame oil
2 teaspoons of sugar

After cleaning and snapping into one-inch pieces, put the beans into a pot of boiling water and cook until crunchy tender. Remove and run cold water over the beans, so they stop cooking. Put in bowl, slice onions over the top, and mix in ginger root. Add salad dressing and serve immediately.
