What can be done about people who do not clear their snow from sidewalks as required by the city? We have a lot of pedestrians in North College Park and some of these sidewalks this winter have been dangerous to walk on (especially for children and parents going to school). Anything that can be done to enforce this necessary issue would be appreciated.

    Hi Anon,

Thanks for your comments. You’re right. Per City code, it’s the responsibility of the residents to shovel snow from sidewalk in front of their houses. City’s code enforcement officers regularly cite those who don’t shovel the sidewalks.

I’d be curious to know how many citations have been issued due to non shoveling of sidewalks since Nov of 2013. I noticed along route 1 that businesses do not shovel the sidewalks in front of their properties. VERY VERY dangerous when everyone has to walk in the street!!!

Also, I know the streets are top priority. But once they are plowed can the plows return to widen the cleared areas so bicyclists have room to ride? So dangerous along Metzerott Road and I’m sure other roads when cyclists don’t have a cleared bike lane. There are so many more bicyclists in the area now.

Hi Anita, City’s Code Enforcement cites property owners along Baltimore Avenue who have not cleared sidewalks . They do this along with the inspections they have scheduled that day, so they usually can’t get to all in the first 24 hours. If you know of any problem areas please call them in to 240.487.3570 so our staff get to them as soon as possible.
