Rhode Island Ave Protected Bike lane Gets 120K MDOT Grants

Good news. Very recently, the MDOT awarded the City with a $120,000 grant, which will hopefully help to complete the design phase of the Rhode Island Ave protected bike lane project. http://www.mdot.maryland.gov/newMDOT/Planning/Bike_Walk/Documents/FY19_GrantAwards.pdf

The City initiated a project in order to make bike lanes on both sides of Rhode Island Ave from MD 193 to the Hollywood Shopping Center safer.

The City engaged the community at two community meetings to seek feedback early this year. A number of options were presented. You can see those options here in this presentation. https://www.collegeparkmd.gov/government/planning/docs/RIAvePublicSlides05092018.pdf

One option that appears to have attracted more support includes the following features:
▪ 5’ bike lane with 2’ buffers, continuous vertical separation
▪ 10’ travel lanes
▪ Conventional bike lanes with shared use path south of Blackfoot Rd

Once the design is completed, the City will seek funds for construction.
