City to Buy Two Route 1 Properties for City Hall Project

At tonight’s meeting, the City Council will consider approving an agreement of sale to purchase property located at 7409 and 7411 Baltimore Avenue for a total price of $1,600,000.

The overall City Hall project is estimated to cost $12.5 million. The project was estimated at $7.9 million when the City Hall decision was made at the Knox Road location in 2014 (please see slide 12 of this staff presentation). The Council also considered another option to keep the current City Hall building and add an extension to it. This project was estimated at $5.5 million.

On November 28, 2017, the City Council approved a resolution in support of exercising eminent domain option to acquire these properties.

Mrs. Margaret Jeanne Kurz Byrd, owner of the properties agreed to sell the properties to the City. The sale will allow the City to move forward with redevelopment of the current City Hall block.

The City will honor and comply with the provisions of the lease agreements with two tenants located at these addresses – the Shanghai Café and Subway. Both of these agreements will expire in September 2019.
