City to Ask Fire Chief with Staffing Concerns at Branchville Fire Department

At tonight’s meeting, the City Council will send a letter to Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor expressing the City’s concerns about level of service at Branchville Volunteer Fire Department and requesting restoration of career fire staff to the Branchville Fire station.

Last week Volunteer Chief Richard Leizar met with Council and advised Council that the number of volunteers at Branchville has dropped from 80 members 3 years ago to 15 members now. Only 5 or 6 of the current members live in the College Park area; some travel from Pennsylvania and southern Maryland.

As a result, Branchville is frequently not able to respond to calls. Other units are then called to respond to Branchville’s primary duty area, residents in north and west College Park which may result in delays in fire and EMS service.
